A Meditation on God

Deuteronomy 6:4 Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one LORD:

  • Profoundly, this is one of the most remarkable declarations in all of Scripture.  Clearly stated, God is the God of Israel and He is one Lord.  As I think about this, Intrinsic within the statement seems to be the acknowledgement of unity.  Unity with Who?  Can only be Himself; this I believe presupposes the Trinity.  God in three persons, just as our creeds declare.  We cannot have a polytheistic thought, though.  This verse doesn’t allow for that.  Later on we find  that God exists as multiple persons; God is diverse within Himself; each person is co-equal with one another; yet He is one.

Deuteronomy 4:39 Know therefore this day, and consider it in thine heart, that the LORD he is God in heaven above, and upon the earth beneath: there is none else.

  • Assuredly, there is no other God apart from the God of Holy Scriptures.  He is alone in His Diety.  He is God over all that is known, and all that is unknown; all that is in Heaven, and all that is in earth.  There is no other who is God.  This Fact must be an understanding that grips our very being.

Isaiah 43:10 Ye are my witnesses, saith the LORD, and my servant whom I have chosen: that ye may know and believe me, and understand that I am he: before me there was no God formed, neither shall there be after me.

  • This verse speaks of the eternal nature of God.  What an honor to be made a witness to who God is!  And servants – chosen!  And since we are chosen, God will provide all we need to be able to understand what He chooses to reveal of Himself.  We will have knowledge and understanding.  !I am He!  The God of all times; how remarkable is it that God tells us about Himself.

Isaiah 45:18 For thus saith the LORD that created the heavens; God himself that formed the earth and made it; he hath established it, he created it not in vain, he formed it to be inhabited: I am the LORD; and there is none else.

  • All that God does is with purpose.  There is nothing trivial or consequential about His work.  He is the sole God; the sole determiner.  He expressly states He is the Creator god – all things are made by Him and there is none to be God other than Him.  His creation is expressly to be populated – a people of witnesses who know Him as God.  No vanity in His Glory.

Exodus 20:3 Thou shalt have no other gods before me. 4 Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth: 5 Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me; 6 And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments.

  • In light of His revelation, how can we serve another God?  How can we possibly create a powerful God?  How can something lessor create something greater?  We are to worship and serve only He that is God – He who alone is worthy.  God is very serious of He diety and glory.  It is a grevious iniquity to bow down to a God of our own making – it will do us no good.

Mark 12:28 And one of the scribes came, and having heard them reasoning together, and perceiving that he had answered them well, asked him, Which is the first commandment of all? 29 And Jesus answered him, The first of all the commandments is, Hear, O Israel; The Lord our God is one Lord: 30 And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment.

  • It is foremost to see God as God; and God as unity – A most important thing to do!  Heart, soul, and mind describes our very being.  The essence of who God created us to be.  Strength speaks of our directed effort; our purpose.  It is to us to engage our heart, mind, soul to love God.  An ability we do not have apart from God.
